Mr Mine OST

Project Summary

When Playsaurus first reached out in 2021 to inquire about new music for their idle hit, Mr. Mine, they had a vision for the soundtrack: they needed an ambient backdrop that would dissolve into the gameplay, never demanding attention yet always there, shaping the mood of every burrowing session. Given their limited budget, I would only be able to compose a single song—a challenging task given their objective. A single looping soundtrack with limited dynamics could easily betray the intent to become unnoticeable the moment a player settled into the rhythm of mining. Rather, it would become a drone, even an annoyance. The soundtrack had to breathe; slowly rising to tiny crests of tension, then ebbing back into valleys, forming an invisible wave that guided the player’s experience without them ever noticing the swell.

To capture the right tonal fingerprint, the team shared a handful of excerpts from their previous release, Cookie Clicker, a title whose score was crafted by Daniel Rosenfeld (C418). Those tracks are built on warm, digital synths that feel both nostalgic and unobtrusive. I set out to echo that aesthetic while giving the game its own voice. Using Logic Pro’s Alchemy synth, I handcrafted a suite of patches that mimicked the crisp, slightly lo‑fi character of C418’s palette but allowed for deeper harmonic movement.

From there, the composition unfolded. I created a series of melodies and musical ideas that flow seamlessly together, create the feeling of movement, and slowly build one on top of another. Other layers sweep in and a subtle beat adds rhythm and continuity. Layer-by-layer, it builds to a tension point then drops to a B section that eludes to time ticking away. The music slowly builds again with new musical ideas and new melodies. Following the idea of a long wave, the tension releases momentarily while a final melody is introduced. A series of supporting synths join to support the final melody as the player is carried to the end the track, building tension and returning some earlier melodies to bring everything home.

Results / Outcomes

After completing the soundtrack, I suggested expanding the score into a suite of six to ten tracks so the game could rotate themes and further diminish any hint of repetition. Budgetary limits kept us to a single song, but the layered, evolving architecture of the piece allowed it to feel fresh for hours on end.

The community’s response confirmed that my approach had hit the mark. Players who have discovered the soundtrack on YouTube have described it as:

“very soulful and unobtrusive” @DK-gi2d

“absolute perfection” @sasacvetkovic8026

“amazing, relaxing and very suitable soundtrack for this game” @tr1ples1x

“10/10 […] calm and interesting which is exactly what I want to hear while playing Mr Mine. ” @mntdw27

It’s exactly the reaction the brief called for. Temporal cues, slow sweeps, evolving textures, and subtle hints of time ticking away give the subconscious impression of progression, reinforcing gameplay loops without overtly “musical” signals. The result is a soundtrack that feels like a hidden companion on the player’s descent, enriching Mr. Mine’s adventure while staying perfectly in the background.
