Rebirth

Algorithmic Music

Project Summary

Rebirth is an ambient music composition that merges the art of sound design with the precision of programming. Created as a personal project during my journey into Pure Data (Pd), this piece explores the dynamic interplay of tempo, pitch, and texture through algorithmic music generation.

At the heart of the piece lies a custom-built system consisting of an 8-note sequencer (Pulse Synth), three WAV samplers, and a Global Playback Module. The Pulse Synth outputs a sine wave pulse that harmonizes with the WAV samplers, each looping audio at distinct intervals: a 32-bar melody (Piano Sampler), a 2-bar piano chord loop (Chord Sampler), and a Waves Sampler that contributes the calming sound of ocean waves hitting a shore.

The Global Playback Module orchestrates the tempo in bpm, starting playback, and allowing a reset of the program. A Modulator module receives messages from the sequencer to incrementally accelerate the tempo and pitch, creating a subtle yet impactful transformation throughout the piece. This gradual increase in playback speed and pitch unfolds over 32 bars, producing a sonic evolution that may only reveal itself upon replaying the piece from the start.

Rebirth is a testament to my passion for music, sound design, and programming. By leveraging the dynamic processing capabilities of Pd and mastering in Logic Pro X, this project allowed me to delve deep into the creative potential of algorithmic composition while reflecting on the themes of growth and transformation.
